Khovd is distinguished by its multi-cultural ethnicity with population of 89,000. It is home to more than 17 nationalities and ethnicities. Each of these groups has its own distinct traditional dwelling and settlement pattern, dress and other cultural distinctions, literary, artistic, and musical traditions.

In addition to the multi-cultural tradition is also home to the Altai Mountain Range with its picturesque landscapes and scenery. Also throughout the Hovd region still remains in the nature countless archeological sites with petroglyphs, cave paintings and deer stone monuments that date back as far as 10,000 years. Also, camel riding by itself, is the gem of this tour. Mongolian has proverb, the sun is closer from the back of the camel, which shows view from the camel ride is a totally different from the standing on the ground. The Bactrian camel, also known as the Mongolian camel or domestic Bactrian camel, is a large even-toed ungulate native to the steppes of Central Asia. It has two humps on its back. Bactrian camels were domesticated thousands of years ago to carry goods and people across Asia. Adapted for harsh conditions, the camels can carry over 400 pounds on long journeys, withstand 100-degree Fahrenheit summers and -20-degree winters and, when nourished, go without eating and drinking for weeks. Their humps act as fat reserves for energy. In 2021, Mongolia has counted 380 thousand domestic camels. Nowadays, nomads of Mongolia still using camels for riding and move for search of new pasture for their livestock.

Day 1

Ulaanbaatar

Upon arrive in Ulaanbaatar (UB), the company guide meets you at the airport/train station and transfers to a hotel in the downtown of UB city. After refreshment and short rest, the tour starts with city tour to the Museum of National History with displays related with Mongolian history and its splendid collection of Mongolian traditional costumes exhibits. If time permits evening tour around of UB – including the World War II Memorial at Zaisan hill with beautiful panoramic view of the city. Welcoming dinner at the restaurant in downtown. Overnight at hotel. (L,D)

Day 2

Ulaanbaatar/Hovd

Ulaanbaatar/Hovd/Hoid tsenher cave/Rock paintings of Yamaan us. Early in the morning transfer to the airport and fly to Hovd city (3 hrs). The Hovd city is the center of 17 minority nationalities of Mongolia. Sightseeing in Hovd city, visit museum, main square and after lunch before drive to the Yamaan Us where can see ancient rock paintings (250km’s), visit black market for purchase items for your own use. On the way to Yamaan Us visit Hoid Tsenher cave. Hoid Tsenher is one of the largest caves in Mongolia, with a main chamber at least eighty-five feet high. It was reportedly inhabited by Stone Age people during the Upper Paleolithic, 10,000 to 40,000 years old. The cave is famous for its rock paintings, which have been dated to 17,000–22,000 years ago. Late afternoon arrive at Yamaan Us where you will be welcomed by local nomads and local guides. The Yamaan Us, or Goat Water Rock Drawings, are located in a narrow valley east of Uench. There are several hundred drawings on the cliff dated to the Late Bronze or Early Iron Age. Set up a camp. Overnight in tent. (B,L,D)

Day 3

Uench canyon

Morning meet companions for the next days – the camels. Today short camel trekking to familiarize and get to know the behavior of Mongolian camels. For the following days we will camel back riding up to the Uench valley and on final day will be rewarded by reaching to the top of mountain and overnight in the bank of fresh water lake. Day 4-7

Uench canyon

Sunrise and sunset in Altai mountains is a moment that you never should miss. Spend four days with nomads and experience their tradition. Average distance of the horse trekking is 10-15 km’s each day. This trip not only gives you an opportunity to be a part of nomadic life but also camel riding through a scenic landscape and formation is an another gem of the tour.

The harsh, dry climate has forced the wild animals of the Altai Mountains to be tough and hardy. In Altai mountains inhabit animals that listed as endangered species like the snow leopard, the argali sheep with its massive curved rams, ibex, lynxes, maral deer, falcons, foxes, golden eagle and the vulture. Many smaller animals have managed to survive in this environment including the snowcock, ringed-neck pheasant, beavers, and marmots. This tour gives you a high opportunity to see and track wild animals. The best time to see them is in the early morning and late evening. (B,L,D)

Day 8

Hovd/Ulaanbaatar

Drive back to Khovd city, fly to Ulaanbaatar. Relax at the hotel and free time at leisure. (B,L,D)

Day 9

Ulaanbaatar

City tour with visit to Gandan Monastery, Fine Art Museum, State Department store and cultural performance show – followed by farewell dinner. (B,L,D)
