By Rail – (as of November 2024 travel by rail to/from Mongolia is still unavailable)

As of November 2024, rail travel to and from Mongolia remains unavailable, but the iconic Trans-Mongolian Railway—a branch of the world-famous Trans-Siberian Railway—continues to captivate travelers with its rich history and extraordinary journey when operational.

This railway connects the Trans-Siberian in Russia to the Chinese rail system, linking Moscow, Ulaanbaatar, and Beijing. Spanning 6,304 km from Moscow to Ulaanbaatar and 1,553 km from Ulaanbaatar to Beijing, the Mongolian segment, completed in 1949 and extended to China in 1955, stretches 1,110 km between the Russian and Chinese borders, passing through Ulaanbaatar. Scenic stopovers offer breathtaking experiences for nature lovers along the way. Before the COVID-19 pandemic, trains like No. 4 and No. 6 from Moscow to Ulaanbaatar departed weekly, while Train No. 24 provided a 30-hour journey from Beijing to Ulaanbaatar, with additional seasonal services in summer. Similarly, Train No. 3 connected Ulaanbaatar to Moscow, though short-haul tickets were often limited. When rail operations resume, the Trans-Mongolian Railway will once again offer travelers an unparalleled experience of cultural immersion, dramatic landscapes, and seamless connections between Russia, Mongolia, and China. Stay updated for announcements and prepare to embark on one of the world’s most iconic train adventures.

By Road – Mongolia has vast road network—stretching over 110,000 km—is an adventure. While only around 7,000 km are paved as of 2024, the rest comprises graded gravel roads, dirt tracks, and cross-country trails. The government’s ongoing investment in infrastructure is steadily improving connections between provincial centers, national parks and Ulaanbaatar. However, for many travelers, Mongolia’s rugged, untamed roads are part of its charm. Here, driving isn’t a routine commute; it’s an overland journey through diverse landscapes, teeming with wildlife and steeped in nomadic culture.

For the ultimate Mongolian road adventure, the Toyota Land Cruiser 4WD and the Russian UAZ minivan are the top choices. The UAZ minivan offers a unique combination of functionality, durability, and character, making it perfect for off-road expeditions. With a high wheelbase, large panoramic windows, ample luggage space, and a sociable interior layout, it comfortably accommodates 4–5 guests, a guide, and a driver. It’s the ultimate “beast of the east,” built to conquer Mongolia’s wild terrain.

For those prioritizing comfort and air conditioning, the Toyota Land Cruiser is a premium alternative. Ideal for couples or small groups, it offers flexibility, privacy, and a smoother ride through Mongolia’s dramatic landscapes.
