Start a journey to the Umnudelger region, where history and culture come alive. This day’s itinerary includes a visit to the remarkable Baldan Bereeven Monastery and the ancient Uglugch Wall. Located in the picturesque valley of Umnudelger, Baldan Bereeven Monastery was established in 1654 and once stood as one of Mongolia’s largest and most significant Buddhist monasteries, housing up to 8,000 monks at its peak in the mid-19th century. Despite facing destruction during the communist purges of 1937, the monastery remains a site of historical importance, set against the majestic backdrop of the Munkh Ulziit Mountains. Visitors can marvel at the intricate cliff carvings, depicting various Buddhist deities, as well as inscriptions of sacred mantras and a large Soyombo symbol. In recognition of its cultural significance, Baldan Bereeven Monastery and its surroundings were placed on the tentative list for UNESCO World Heritage Site nomination in 2012. Then we will explore the Uglugch Wall, a historically significant structure built entirely of natural stones, without the use of concrete or clay. Rising 2 to 4 meters high and 3 meters wide, this impressive wall features two entrances along its southern sections, stretching a remarkable 3 kilometers. While the inner fortress shows no traces of former buildings, a stone stele located within is believed to be Chinggis Khan’s horse-tying pole, adding a sense of intrigue to the visit. Overnight in a ger camp. (B/L/D)
