While you are in MONGOLIA
On 20-21 January 2025, BTTC Travel, in collaboration with the Dund Bogoch community and the Soum Governor’s Nature Conservation Fund, implemented a biotechnical initiative to support mountain wildlife in Uench Soum, Khovd Province. This effort aimed to ensure the survival and well-being of species such as Argali Sheep and Ibex Goats during the harsh winter conditions. In accordance with guidelines approved by the Governor of Uench Soum, 30 haystacks were strategically placed across key grazing areas to assist mountain wildlife. The distribution included 10 haystacks for Argali Sheep in Nariin Gol and Nariin Khurgelt Bogoch, 10 haystacks for Ibex Goats in Ovor Tsakhir of Khargait, and 10 haystacks at the grazing area’s edge in Naryn Tsakhir. These measures were vital as snow in the mountainous regions reached a thickness of 20-50 cm, hardened by strong storms, limiting access to natural forage.
A surveillance study was conducted to assess the grazing conditions and overall health of mountain wildlife. The results were encouraging: no signs of forage shortages, disease, or injuries among wildlife were observed. Approximately 7,000 small livestock are wintering in the region, spread across five herder families in Davaan Blue Spring, three herder families in Nariin, and one herder family in the Nuragt valley of Khargait River. Herders play a crucial role in monitoring and safeguarding wildlife, tirelessly guarding their animals against threats, including wolves.
Local herders have raised concerns about increasing wolf predation on Argali Sheep and Ibex Goats. They have proposed a request to relevant authorities to address the wolf issue, as wolves are reportedly visible in the pasture areas through binocular surveillance. BTTC Travel remains committed to promoting sustainable tourism and environmental stewardship. By collaborating with local communities and government initiatives, we aim to protect the unique biodiversity of Mongolia’s mountain regions while supporting the livelihoods of local herders.
